Dean Windass has never suffered the pain of relegation - and the Bradford City hardman doesn't plan to see that record shattered.

That's why Windass will step out at The Dell tomorrow demanding: "We've got to beat Southampton. We can't afford a draw."

Bottom side City, ten points adrift of Premiership safety, are an unbackable 66-1 on to go down with the bookies, and have not scored a goal since New Year's Day.

Windass admitted: "People were slagging us off before we had even kicked a ball this season and said we had no chance. But we've got to start winning quickly or it will be all over.

"But there are 13 games left and points on the table to be won. You can't chuck it in otherwise there's no point in playing.

"I've never been relegated in 11 years as a player and I don't intend to start now without a real fight."

Saints have not conceded a league goal at home since West Ham's Trevor Sinclair scored on November 25. A sixth successive shut-out tomorrow would equal a club record set in 1924.

Windass said: "Any Glenn Hoddle team is very organised. They are big and strong at the back but we've got nothing to lose.

"A point down there would be nice but we really need more. Teams like Coventry are struggling as well and all the time they are losing we've got to start picking up points on them.

"We've played all the top teams now and we've got to drag the lower ones in before it's too late.

"People are blaming the strikers for the lack of goals but we haven't had the service. I missed an easy one at Sunderland which I hold my hand up for but it annoys me when the strikers are criticised when we aren't getting the chances."

Robbie Blake said: "Southampton is a massive game and we have to keep battling and hope the results will turn our way.

"But the key to that is scoring. The lads up front have got to look at themselves and think about scoring goals."

Benito Carbone is still out with a groin injury but City will be up against their first big-name casualty, Dan Petrescu.

Jefferies said: "He maybe suits Southampton's situation rather than the dogfight we are in. Dan may not see it that way but we had to make cuts and at the same time he was one of the major earners.

"He got a goal on his full debut there and good luck to him. But he wasn't doing well enough for Bradford City and that's how you judge people - not how well they are doing at other clubs.

"Southampton have always been a very difficult side to beat at The Dell even when they were struggling.

"People won't see them slipping up to us so we'll try to go there and produce a shock result like at Leicester."
