Staff at Cliffe Castle Museum, Keighley, are putting their heart and "sole" into their latest exhibition. The display is inspired by the museum's collection of footwear from the past three centuries.

The Boot's on the Other Foot includes shoes and boots constructed either to protect human feet or for fashion, with all its social implications. Examples range from the 17th century to 1980, and from Japan and India, as well as locally-made clogs and cloggers tools.

The exhibition shows how in manufacturing towns like Keighley, the functional wooden-soled clog was replaced by the machine-made leather boot after the First World War. Cloggers continued until the 1960s in Oakworth, and in Silsden clog irons were made in former nail-makers' forges from the 19th century.

The display includes elegant, embroidered, painted or gem-encrusted fabric slippers, simple sandals and ladies lace-up leather boots.

Also featured are a host of mass-produced fashion styles from the 20th century, including high stiletto heels and platforms.

The Boot's on the Other Foot continues until May 6 at the museum. Admission is free and the museum is open Sundays, noon-5pm, and Tuesdays to Saturdays, 10am-5pm.
