Keighley will have to wait an extra month to discover whether it will get security cameras near the railway station.

The government has postponed a funding decision until the end of February because it has received so many bids for cash from around the country.

The plan is for two new cameras, covering the station car park and adjacent Low Mill Lane, to be linked to Keighley's state-of-the-art CCTV camera network.

The 24-hour manned coverage would combat the high number of car break-ins and arson attacks.

Train firm Northern Spirit and the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway have promised cash but the rest must come from a Home Office anti-crime fund.

Council officer Trevor Green, who oversees the CCTV system, is due to meet with Home Office officials on Tuesday to discuss the bid.

He expects a final decision to be delayed because the government was "inundated" with grant bids before the December closing date, and needs time to sift through them.

Low Mill Lane fits the funding criteria because it is a high-crime area, and Mr Green says: "I'm still very optimistic."
