The Salvation Army in Keighley is backing the local Indian Earthquake appeal.

Lieutenant Alison Gardner from the Salvation Army in Keighley said: "We are joining with the other Keighley churches and the Keighley News in a collection for the appeal.

"There will be a collection in the Keighley churches on Sunday.

"The Salvation Army in Western India is very strong and there are more members in India than there are over here."

In the city of Ahmedabad, the Salvation Army's church community centre is being used as a shelter to provide emergency medical care for eight surrounding villages.

A 16-strong medical team with two doctors from the Salvation Army's hospital in the city will help with medical relief efforts.

Senior Leaders from Indian Western headquarters in Mumbai are travelling to the affected area of Gujarat to see what else the Salvation Army can do.

The Salvation Army in Western India has 32,000 members in 211 local church and community centres, as well as 448 employees, ten-day schools and two hospitals.

The Salvation Army in the UK has launched a national emergency appeal for those affected by the earthquake. Credit card donations can be received on 0800 028 4000.
