A lifeline has been thrown to Baildon cubs who feared they would have nowhere to meet.

Leaders of the 11th Shipley and Baildon Moravian Cubs were told their base at the former Sandal First School nursery was to be demolished because of vandalism.

But Bradford Council officers, who said two of the temporary classrooms on the Cliffe Avenue site would have to be knocked down, have decided to keep a third for the cub group.

A Council spokesman said: "We have made arrangements for the cubs to continue their uninterrupted use of the site as a base for the foreseeable future."

As reported in the Telegraph & Argus last year, the cub group was forced to gather at a bus stop when its meeting place at Ferniehurst First School closed.

Numbers dwindled from 22 to 13, but since it moved to the old Sandal First School the pack has grown again to 20 members.

Jennifer Griffin, who runs the cubs, was delighted at the news. "We were told the buildings were going to have to come down and we only had two or three weeks. It will be a bit cramped but it is lovely that we can keep it," she said.

Mrs Griffin said there was a lack of facilities for youngsters in the village and efforts would continue to find the children a suitable base.

"We are appealing for something to be done because in a deprived area of Baildon everything is being closed down - there is nowhere for the children," she said.

Councillor John Cole (Lib Dem, Baildon) said: "I think the cub scouts have been mucked about as a result of the school reorganisation and the knock-on effects and I will do my level best to help Mrs Griffin find a more secure long term base."
