People willing to give their time to help homeless individuals and families are being sought by Bradford Council.

The authority's Volunteering Unit wants to recruit people to help others settle into accommodation, and break the cycle of homelessness.

Anne Morley, volunteers manager, said: "This is an interesting opportunity for anyone who is considering a career working with people, and can give one day a week between 10am and 3.30pm.

"Many homeless people need regular support on a one-to-one basis. This can vary, depending on their needs, and what the volunteer has to offer."

She said that some people would require just a couple of visits, while others need a longer commitment to help settle in their new home or community. A homeless family may need accompanying to an appointment at a hospital or clinic, and others will need emotional support, or just help to find out about the area in which they are rehoused.

No qualifications are necessary, except an ability to get on with people. The Council provides training in such useful subjects as basic listening skills, equal rights, homeless legislation and the role of the volunteer. Staff at the unit provide support and supervision and volunteers receive out-of-pocket expenses.
