HEAVY rain caused more matches to be postponed last weekend and the chances of completing the league and cup competitions now look in doubt.

Plans were already in place to review last month's decision to go ahead with the full programme and it looks almost certain that tough decisions will have to be taken soon.

Last week more games were called off than were able to go ahead but Cross Hills were able to open up a two point lead when their match at Grassington got the green light. Despite a very heavy pitch both teams produced good football. Hills had more flair up front but Grassington's defence held firm with their keeper having an excellent match.

It took a powerhouse shot from Robert Smith to set up the chance which broke the deadlock. His shot was blocked but Gary Greene followed up to rifle it home. A deflected free kick from Harry Peacock provided the second to give Hills a 2-0 half time lead.

Grassington attacked from the start of the second half and were rewarded with a goal from a free kick. Cross Hills quickly hit back with Peacock's second following a cross from Matthew Lloyd.

The Dales side did not give up and further pressure brought them a second goal but despite more pressure they could not get an equaliser. The two points take hills closer to the title.

Keighley Lifts and Oxenhope Recreation also mastered difficult conditions to provide a good game. Lifts created good early chances and could have had a two goal lead before Oxenhope clicked into gear. The Worth Valley side eventually took the lead with Simon Knaggs providing the finishing touch after a good build up, but his shot took a wicked deflection to fly over the keeper's head.

Lifts looked brighter in the early stages of the second half but the ball just would not go into the net. Oxenhope hit a purple patch with two quick goals from Paul Sewell and Simon Knaggs. Steven Murray made certain the points were going their way with a cracking shot after a great solo run from the half way line.

Cowling travelled to Intake in Division One and found that one of goals didn't have a net. After a long delay the teams agreed to play but the unsettled Cowling team conceded three sloppy goals in the early stages.

They performed better in the second half but poor finishing let them down with only a Michael Jones goal to show for their effort. As they pushed forward Intake took advantage scoring two more goals to secure a flattering 5-1 victory.

Sutton were anxious to return to winning ways when they travelled to Barnoldswick United who were just above them in the table. Both teams played well in sticky conditions with Barnoldswick having slightly the upper hand. They were thwarted by Jason McNulty in the Sutton goal who kept a blank sheet in the first half.

The deadlock was finally broken deep in the second period when the home side took the lead. Barnoldswick pressed for a second but Sutton defended well and were rewarded with an equaliser from a quick counter attack to share the points.

The teams are due to meet again tomorrow at Sutton in the League Cup.

Lothersdale Athletic are pushing for promotion from Division Two but found Grindleton Reserves hard to crack. The Ribble Valley team started well and had Dale pushed back in defence. They held firm and mounted occasional raids, scoring just before half time.

Dale were sharper in the second half scoring a second in the early stages. Grindleton's heads went down and Dale began to dominate scoring a third to keep on course for a promotion place. Scorers were Darren Holmes, Paul Smith and John Lawrence.

Cowling Reserves entertained Bradley Reserves in a very entertaining match which the visitors won 4-2. Bradley started the better side but Cowling soaked up pressure before forcing their way into the game. They should have scored but wasted a vital chance and Bradley took advantage to open their account. A 20-yard shot from James Complin flashed into the net to equalise. Bradley were awarded a penalty which goalkeeper Tom Lennon saved before Bradley regained their lead on half time.

Cowling hit back in the second half but could not find the net and Bradley took a 3-1 lead with a scrambled effort. Chris Watson scored a super goal to set up a tight finish. Bradley eventually made sure of the points with a fourth goal which Cowling hotly disputed claiming handball.
