Anglers have been asked to turn 'wildlife detectives' and report any sightings of a type of waterfowl new to the area.

Members of Keighley angling club have been told to look out for goosanders which have been reported in the area.

"I have never seen one myself but I am told they have been spotted on Chelker Reservoir near Addingham and may be active in the Keighley area," said angling club president Laurence Brocklesby.

The birds are about the size of a wild duck with a red bill. The male has a green-glossed head with white body and black back while the female has an orange-red head with shaggy crest with a grey body.

In the spring and summer they nest in holes in trees on the banks of large rivers in Scotland, Northern England and parts of Wales but in winter are found in small flocks and dive for long periods in search of fish.

Any sightings on Keighley angling club waters should be reported to Mr Brocklesby on 01535-216321.

The club's first canal match was fished by 42 anglers with a winning weight of 5lb 9oz caught in the Boatyard. The second match was won with 8lb 10oz taken behind The Bridge public house, the bonus peg payout has not been won.

The next match is to be held on February 18 with details available on 01535-646025.

Members are reminded to carry club cards and to check other anglers using their waters for proof of membership or day tickets, which are not available on the bank.

The club is also concerned that large pike are being taken by some anglers and tough action is to be taken against anyone found guilty. Anyone taking pike over 5lb will be expelled from the club and members have also been reminded that all fish caught on the canal must be returned to the water. Trout over 12 inches can be taken between March 25 and September 30, but only two fish per session are allowed.
