It's time to ring the changes if you want to hammer out a new hobby. The bellringers of Haworth are inviting people to join them each Monday at the parish church.

They are holding an open night next week in a bid to attract new members in search of a ding-dong of a time.

The group rings the bells for church services on Sunday mornings, as well as weddings and special occasions.

But member Bev Dickinson says members do not have to be churchgoers in order to enjoy pulling the ropes. "We don't expect people to ring for services then go to worship. We even have a couple of Catholics who ring for us then go to their church," she says.

"It's not churchy, it's quite a social thing. It's good fun. We sometimes have outings to ring at other churches.

"It's one of those hobbies where you can learn the basics and leave it at that, or take it as far as you want."

Bev says membership ranges from 16 and 17-year-olds to a woman pensioner, and new recruits are needed because the teenagers are heading off to university.

Bev adds: "Ringers can be any age within reason. It's not to do with strength, it's whether you can reach the bottom of the ropes."

The open evening will be held next Monday, at 7.30pm, in the church hall, opposite St Michael's Parish Church, at the top of Main Street.

Following a short talk, the group will move across to the church for a demonstration in the bell tower, then on to the Old Sun pub for a drink.
