Keighley proved it was a cut above when it hosted the European premiere of the British comedy film, Blow Dry.

Residents ditched their winter woollies and dressed up with all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood for the film, which could do for Keighley hairdressers what The Full Monty did for Sheffield's strippers.

The front of Keighley's Picturehouse cinema was transformed for the occasion with golden streamers and bunting while a huge pair of silver scissors took pride of place above the cinema's entrance.

The red carpet was also rolled out for one of the stars of the show Bill Nighy, who arrived in town to help launch the film written by Keighley's Simon Beaufoy.

A perfectly-coiffured Mr Nighy said that he was delighted to return to Keighley for the premiere.

The 52-year-old actor, who plays the villain of the piece as an unscrupulous hairdressing champion, said: "I've filmed three films in this area now and I love it up here, so I always take any chance I get to come back."

Strobe lights shone out across the town's night sky as hundreds of premiere-goers were chauffeured from the cinema to the party on vintage Yorkshire buses.

And after a packed screening, members of the invited audience agreed the film was a cut above.

TV weatherman Paul Hudson, said: "It's a fantastic film, and brilliant for Keighley."

Emmerdale star Chris Smith, said: "I really enjoyed it. I didn't know what to expect in a film about hairdressing but it was really good."

Keighley Councillor Barry Thorne, added: "I thought it was superb - it really caught the feeling of Keighley."
