Stuart McCall is ready to nail his colours to the Bradford City mast and steer them back into the top flight.

The skipper wants to kill off the uncertainty surrounding his own future by agreeing a new deal to stay at Valley Parade.

And he is determined to bring down the curtain on an illustrious playing career by leading City to promotion next season.

McCall has been in inspirational form in City's late-season renaissance and ran the midfield in Saturday's 2-0 win over Derby, a result that staved off relegation for another week.

He is already licking his lips at the prospect of a successful campaign in Division One, dismissing suggestions that he could be on his way out after contract talks were put back until the summer.

McCall said: "I think it will probably be my last season and I'd relish the challenge of helping us to get back up. That would be a great way to sign off.

"I was a bit frustrated before deadline day because nothing was decided and I didn't know what was going to happen. But the gaffer wants me to stay and hopefully I can.

"It may sound funny but I'm looking forward to next season now. It will be nice to get back to winning games and scoring goals.

"There are lads who've been here a while like Gary Walsh, Wayne Jacobs, Gareth Whalley and Jamie Lawrence who have come up from the First Division. That's a strong nucleus of a side and if we can get in a few good players, I think we can set our sights high.

"I'm not sure if Beni Carbone will still be here, that's probably a case of tossing a coin in the air, but Ashley Ward is doing very well and I think we could have a great season."

Boss Jim Jefferies also wants to persuade Robert Molenaar to stay for the promotion fight. The Dutchman is out of contract as soon as the Bantams are officially sent down. But Jefferies said: "I would love to keep him."
