Avenue are hoping to celebrate promotion when they play Witton Albion at Horsfall Stadium tonight.

The 2-1 victory at Winsford United on Saturday has left in-form Avenue needing only one point from their last four matches to lift them into the UniBond League Premier Division, and it would need a major upset for them not to win the Division One championship.

Only their most pessimistic supporter would doubt they could do it against Witton, but manager Trevor Storton is a canny professional, and he said: "I never like counting my chickens because sometimes things go against you.

"I know we can win promotion tonight, but it won't be an easy match because Witton are not an easy team.

"On the other hand, I believe we can not only get the point we need, but we can win our last four matches if we put our mind to it."

If they do that then Avenue will be crowned champions.

After losing three matches in a row during January, Avenue have won 11 of their last 13 games to take them to the verge of promotion and the championship

Storton said: "We sat down and took stock after we lost at home to Farsley Celtic in the UniBond League cup at the end of January and discussed how we could turn it around.

"We lost our next league match 2-1 against Congleton three days later - a game we should have won 10-0 - but we have done great since then.

"I never look at statistics. I let other people worry about them. My job is to prepare the team properly.

"And it is a nice feeling to be in the position we find ourselves tonight.

"The players have done ever so well and the genuine supporters have been fantastic and they have followed us in good numbers away from home. Sometimes you need that support and it would be nice to have a good turn-out tonight."

Storton's only injury doubt is striker Jason Maxwell, who has been out of action with a neck injury.

His striking partnership with leading scorer Andy Hayward has been one of the key features of Avenue's successful season, but Storton said: "I spoke to him on Monday and he is struggling. If he is still struggling tonight I won't involve him."

Liversedge are also in action tonight and if they avoid defeat in their visit to rock bottom club Staveley MW in the Northern Counties East Premier Division they will be mathematically safe from relegation

Wayne Bruce's men almost guaranteed their status with a 1-0 home win over the same opposition on Saturday, and would complete the job, with four games remaining, with as much as a draw at the Chesterfield club's Inkersall Road ground.

Bruce brings former Halifax Town defender James Stansfield back into the squad, but has lost on-loan striker Danny Toronczak to another ankle injury.
