Textile manufacturers have been warned they are missing out on chances to help boost the Yorkshire economy.

Barry Whitaker, pictured, managing director of Bradford-based company Allertex Ltd and chairman of the Textile Institute, said there was no reason why the industry should not meet the challenges posed by international competitors.

Speaking to a lunch attended by leading local figures in the industry, Mr Whitaker said: "There are no reasons why carefully-planned new textile investment in the UK should not be profitable.

"A new cotton spinning and weaving plant, based on the latest technology, can potentially produce at a lower cost with better and more consistent quality than a plant of a similar size in India or Indonesia."
