ON a pitch that had softened a little from last week due to the earlier rain, Pool Mills won the toss for the third time this year and asked Upper Wharfedale to take first knock in the belief that the bowlers would get some help from it.

This was the case as Anthony Gilmartin made an early breakthrough having C Butt caught behind for three. From this point, however, things started to go pear-shaped for Mills as chance after chance went begging.

John Pearson made an aggressive 21, R Foster 43 and D Crabtree 55 in the visitors' total of 186-9. The bowling figures don't read too badly but had the catches been taken and the general fielding better they would have been much improved.

Once again young Richard Smith was the most effective, taking 4-37. Veteran Brian Davison took 3-58 and Gilmartin 2-45.

The Mills reply got off to a most explosive start with Mark Wilkinson opening the innings and clubbing the ball to all parts of the ground. He made 29 before 'giving himself up.' Gilmartin then joined in and made a quickfire 16. At this point Mills were well up with the required rate and with Ian Goodings and David Hardaker batting in a more subdued manner a victory looked on the cards.

However, a needlless run-out started a bit of a collapse and with Goodings going for 27 Mills were left hanging on for a draw. Hardaker finished on a very polished 51 not out as the home side finished on 163 for seven.

For the visitors T Whitaker took 3-33 and J Bean 3-35. Although it was a disappointing result for Mills they still remain unbeaten.

Eight man Menston

were no match

for Woodhouse

EVEN the incentive of a home tie against local rivals Guiseley in the second round of the Birtwhistle Cup couldn't inspire Menston.

Their second team turned out with just eight men for the Birtwhistle Cup re-play against Woodhouse on Sunday.

After tieing the first encounter the sides set out on Subday with Menston struggling from the outset with only eight men.

Woodhouse hammered 286-9 with opener J Walwyn hitting 48 and J Monkhouse and A Hodgson 46 apiece. The veteran Graham Wells played a cameo role with a knock of 27 followed by a return of 2-6. Menston fell for 80 in reply despite a brave 34 from Alex Hudson. M Walwyn was another who produced a cameo role backing up his 2 1no with 3-7.
