Rail users have spoken of their frustration after discovering that the new summer timetable - introduced only days ago - is already out of date.

Derrick Joanes, secretary of the Wharfedale Rail Users' Group (WRUG), said: "It has caused a lot of anger and resentment.

"The published timetable leaflets indicate that Sunday travellers between Leeds and Ilkley have to change at Shipley but a late change of plan means that the Leeds-Shipley section of the journey will be by bus, rather than train.

"These unsatisfactory arrangements apply throughout the summer until September 23."

Mr Joanes said the group accepted that work had to be carried out at Leeds station but objected to the lack of information available.

And Tom Wesley, WRUG chairman, said: "It is essential more information is provided detailing alterations to the published timetable. Posters should be displayed at each station and advertisements placed in the press giving the actual times of replacement buses.

"We are also concerned that Ilkley's tourist industry will be hit on Sundays all through the summer as many people will be put off by the hour's travel time between Leeds and Ilkley because of the bus replacement service."

Further service alterations have been announced for the Bank Holiday weekend on May 26-28 due to work at Ilkley, and rail users fear this will affect tourism in the town as well as causing further heartache for travellers.

On Saturday, May 26 and Monday, May 28 trains will operate only between Leeds and Guiseley.

Mr Wesley said: "We know of various changes to the timetable but the precise details of the timetable are shrouded in mystery and vary according to whoever you ask."

Rail users have also been warned of further disruption to Wharfedale line services on Saturday, June 16 and Saturday, July 14.

In a letter to rail users, Arriva Trains Regional Director Peter Cushing advises passengers to check times in advance by calling the National Rail Enquiry Service on 08457 48 49 50, by visiting www.nationalrail.co.uk or by picking up a timetable from a staffed station.

But according to Mr Wesley, last week none of these sources were providing accurate information.

A spokesman for Arriva Trains Northern admitted there were problems giving out information.

"We are aware that there was a problem with notices last week but this has been rectified and notices about the disruption due to engineering works at Ilkley at the weekend will be going up from today.

"As far as the pocket timetable is concerned, yes, late changes have been made but it says clearly in all the timetables that this is due to engineering works. The information is not specific but all the timetables state that disruptions are inevitable."
