A Bradford man who lost his 17-year-old daughter to a hereditary heart disease has discovered he could have been suffering from the same condition for two years.

Gary Hutchinson, 42, landlord of the Girlington pub, in Girlington, was distraught when his daughter Vicky died from a rare heart condition - dilated cardiomyopathy - two years ago.

Vicky's condition was diagnosed ten years after he and his wife Janet lost their only son, Adrian, through an enlarged heart when he was just six months old.

But now Mr Hutchinson has been taken to Leeds General Infirmary for specialist care from the same doctor who treated his daughter.

His wife Janet, 38, said she was devastated but had feared the worst when her partner started displaying the same symptoms as their daughter.

She said her husband had been unwell for years but had deteriorated suddenly two weeks ago.

She said: "He was breathless and coughing up blood. He looked terrible.

"He hasn't been well since Vicky's death but he put it down to stress. Now I just can't believe it's happening again.

"I'm lucky I've got a good staff at the pub and my family are rallying around."

Mrs Hutchinson said her husband had been told that X-rays taken as far back as 1999 could have shown he was suffering the same heart condition.

"For the last two years they have been treating him for his kidneys and then for his liver, but all along it was this," she said. "I'm really angry because he could have been getting treatment."

Mrs Hutchinson, whose 17-year-old daughter Helen also suffers from cardiomyopathy, said her husband may have to undergo a heart transplant operation if drug treatments did not work.

She said: "He is looking better now he's in hospital. Hopefully the drugs will work but we'll just have to wait and see."
