The design of the proposed replacement for the Odeon cinema might not be the look that everyone wanted. However, the planned development of four bars, a night club, casino and 86-bedroom hotel throws up some even more fundamental questions.

Chief among them is: is it wise for this and various other schemes proposed for central Bradford to go ahead before the new blueprint for the city centre is drawn up?

It is important that projects are well-thought-out and sustainable in the context of the city centre as a whole. The aim of the blueprint is to provide an overview. There are risks attached to jumping the gun.

Certainly Bradford needs budget-priced hotel rooms if it is to attract visitors. The idea of lots of people staying in the city centre and enlivening it in the evenings and at weekends is an attractive one.

However, with four hotels already in the pipeline, there could be a risk of supply outstripping demand, at least in the short term.

It also has to be asked whether the city centre really needs still more bars. The development so far of the West End has been beneficial for Bradford in many ways. It has created a focal point for social life. Many people who used to travel to other towns and cities for a night out now stay here.

It has not been without its down side. The police have had problems with drink-related violence. On balance, though, the West End bar boom has been good for Bradford. But can we have too much of a good thing?
