A heartbroken father has decorated his home this Christmas in memory of his son who was killed by a hit and run driver.

Paul Haley took the difficult decision to celebrate Christmas because his son Andrew had loved the festive season so much.

Andrew died from massive injuries after a red VW Passat ploughed into him on Barkerend Road on October 18.

Mr Haley, 38, of Fagley, said his whole family had struggled to come to terms with the teenager's death and the run-up to Christmas had been a particularly emotional time.

"Christmas has always been a very family orientated time for us, it was always for the kids, and this year it is going to be very difficult.

"We have put all the trimmings up because Andrew loved Christmas, he was a big kid like me. But it was a very hard decision. A lot of thought went into it but we decided to trim up for Andrew because he would have wanted trimmings."

His dad said Andrew was so excited that he would help decorate the house and always put a lot of thought into buying presents for his family.

"His enthusiasm helped to make Christmas for us but this year there won't be a pile of presents on his chair."

Andrew, a former pupil at Yorkshire Martyrs Catholic College, Tong Street, had been out with friends on the night he was knocked down.

The Passat, which was stolen, was later found burned out in Wapping Road, off Canal Road.

Mr Haley said he hopes the case will be featured on a BBC Crimewatch programme next year and said he is not giving up in the hunt for his son's killer.

"The person who has done this will be spending Christmas happily with their parents and we haven't got our son. They call it joyriding but where is the joy? There is no joy in this for us.

"Eventually they will be caught and I will not stop until my last breath to make sure the police continue the investigation. Somebody out there knows something about this accident."
