Keighley Albion 14, Heworth 23: Albion continue to look for their first victory of the season in Division Two after this battling home defeat against fifth-placed York outfit Heworth.

Albion started well but Heworth went ahead with Dave Carling penalty.

Keighley hit back and some good approach play by Andy Bowness and Kris Kirk saw Gareth Greenbank send Ian Spencer in for a try from short range.

Heworth's Carl Potter and Jason Gatus took the game to Albion and an outrageous dummy from Sam Clarke saw him score a try by the posts. Carling added the goal to make it 8-4.

Both teams were defensively strong at this time, but Heworth broke the deadlock when Gatus crossed wide out.

Potter then dropped a goal to give his side the extra point to make it 13-4.

Albion went back on the attack and from a quick tap penalty they got the ball to Andy Parker who sent Kirk charging in at the corner for a well taken try.

Albion played up the slope in the second half and took the game straight back into the Heworth half with a good run from Ben Farrar, but they lost the ball. The visitors punished Albion when Mark Green nipped crossed to make it 17-8.

The Keighley side attacked again through Bowness and Steve Wrench who worked hard to set up another score. Martin Fryers was then sent to the sin bin and from the penalty, Carling converted to put his side clear at 19-8.

Albion battled on gamely. Chris Brookes joined in the attack and his weighted chip kick over the Heworth defence saw Bowness reach the ball first who the beat off the full back before scoring a try, Kirk added the goal to make it 19-14.

This gave the visitors a shock and they had to work overtime in defence as Albion pressed. But Heworth got back on the attack and Potter's short ball to Gatus saw him secure his second try.

The last 20 minutes turned into a dour affair as both teams were unable to take control of the game.

Albion had given everything and at times looked the better side, but it was Heworth who had scored the most points. Gatus, with two tries, took the Heworth man of the match, closely followed by Potter and Mick Harrison.

For Albion, Parker led by example but it was Gareth Greenbank who took man of the match with Wrench and Bowness picking up the players' player awards.

This weekend Albion host Normanton Knights at Cougar Park, 2.30pm.
