Otley Saracens 7, Sedgeley Park A 38: SARACENS' unbeaten run of 17 games came to an end when they were well beaten by a strong and well organised Park side who they had beaten narrowly earlier in the season. They were not helped by the absence of 11 squad members due to either elevation to the first team squad or non-availability.

Park made the early running but Saracens' defence held before the visitors took the lead with a converted try on 12 minutes. Saracens continued to soak up the pressure before breaking out with a good move and when Matt Walker was stopped short James Henry was up in support to score and level with the conversion. A penalty by Park gave them a 10-7 half-time lead.

The turning point came shortly after the re-start when Otley gained possession from a Park knock-on and Ryan Duckett, who was operating at centre, cut through and with a try under the posts beckoning, a despairing ankle tap knocked him off balance sufficient to allow the cover to get back.

Park went straight to the other end and the winger squeezed in at the corner. The try was converted and their kicker dropped a goal shortly after. Saracens tried to open out with slow possession but the ball was dropped in midfield and Park gathered to race away for a try. The conversion was missed but a penalty was added shortly after.

Little was going right for Saracens as they lost hooker Mike Hallewell with an arm injury and the reshuffle left colts prop Ben Fear on the wing but the first time he got the ball he made ground to the line before being driven over, only for the referee to rule 'held up'. In the closing minutes Park broke away twice to score tries and set the seal on a deserved win. Saracens stuck to it against the odds but certainly missed the absentees and for the first time this season failed to reach double figures.

O Crossleyans A 5

Otley Tongans 26

TONGANS, with a much changed side, produced a competent performance to beat a battling Crossleyans Second XV. Otley started strongly, gaining the edge in the set pieces, to mount pressure but tended to take the wrong option and it was midway through the half before they scored.

The pack drove down the right before releasing and the ball was moved left with Gareth Guyers joining the line to go over in the corner. Just before half-time Steve Kershaw darted over from a ruck near the Crocks line. Will Foster added the conversion to make it 12-0.

Crossleyans brought on three replacements in the second-half and their pack evened things up but the Tongans' defence was as sound as ever. Stuart Oliver, who was having a good game at No. 8, made a strong run and found Tom Grubb in support and the latter went over near the posts for Foster to convert.

Grant Mitchell added another when he was at the start and end of the move to score, Foster again converting. Crocks played with a lot of spirit and scored a consolation try in strange circumstances. A kick through was covered by Gareth Guyers but his hack to touch hit Craig Jackson, who was running back and the ball rolled over the try line for the centre to win the race for the touch-down.

On Sunday Otley Under 10s travelled to Doncaster for a triangular with Doncaster and Scunthorpe. Their hosts played Scunthorpe first and it was evident that Otley would once again be up against much bigger sides than themselves.

Taking the field against Scunthorpe the Otley team showed from the start that they were in the mood to put their recent indifferent form behind them and proceeded to run Scunthorpe around the pitch.

Good ball was won by forwards Ben Weaving and Sam Thornton enabling space to be created for Tom Barrett to run in for four tries, whilst sterling tackling by Joseph Palmer and Chris Toovey kept Scunthorpe at bay. The final score was four tries to two in favour of Otley. Man-of-the-Match was Ben Weaving.

In the second game Otley knew it was going to be difficult having never beaten Doncaster on their home ground. However the boys carried on from their performance in the previous game and proceeded to delight the watching parents with an excellent display of open running rugby and unflinching defence. If several passes had gone to hand the final score would have been much greater in Otley's favour.

Iain Craven playing out of position in the backs showed that he has talents that have been hidden in the depths of the front row and Danny Oldfield had his most powerful game of the season culminating in his first try of the season. The whole team played excellently making the decision of Man-of-the-Match very difficult, however for his performance playing out of position this was awarded to Iain Craven. The final score was six tries to Otley, none to Doncaster.
