Five garages were destroyed in the early hours of Wednesday morning when a large tree was blown down in high winds.

Unfortunately for their owners, two garages, which are behind houses on Hainworth Wood Road, Keighley, had cars inside.

Gary Armstrong, 38, said: "I heard it at about 20 to five in the morning.

"I'd only just finished having some work done on the car, I haven't even been out in it yet."

John Proctor, 54, also woke up to find his car under the fallen tree.

He said: "I haven't seen the car, I haven't been near it yet, I don't think its safe. At least it only fell on to the garages. It could have been worse. Thankfully no-one was hurt."

Residents have also expressed their concern at the risk from a second tree growing next to the fallen one.

They say it has been made unsafe by the fallen tree and that it must be cut down before any more damage is done.

Karen Gresham 35, said: "They need to get the other one cut down, the fallen tree has left a big hole and the other one is leaning."

A spokesman for North British Housing, who own the land where the trees are located, said: "We have already met with local residents, insurers and a local tree surgeon to arrange the removal of the fallen tree.

"We have assessed the safety of another tree and have contracted someone to start work on removing the fallen tree and then cutting down the other tree, which is not under a Tree Preservation Order."
