COUGARS have been given the go-ahead to run a team in the Under-19 Academy competition.

After being prevented from entering the Under-17s junior academy, the club fought tooth and nail to get into the Under-19 section and have been given the go-ahead.

"It is tremendous news," said chairman Neil Spencer. "We are determined to build on our youth policy and need a team at this level."

The team will be managed by former Keighley Schools coach Jeremy Crowther who is now looking for sponsors to give the team their support.

Coach Gary Moorby said: "This is brilliant news not just for the club but for the many talented youngsters that are playing in the town. Credit must go to Jason Ramshaw and Jeremy Crowther for the countless hours they have put in to get us accepted.

"The side will receive input from all the coaching staff and Paul Royston will be closely monitoring their weight training and dietery needs. The season runs from May until September which allows all the players to fulfil their amateur commitments..

"Hopefully next year we will also have an Under-17s side."

The good news on the playing front is that Craig Horne has been given the all clear to begin his rehabilitation and should be back in action before the end of April.

Karl Smith received bruised ribs against Barrow and is looking doubtful for Sunday's trip to Batley, Leeds Rhinos youngster Craig Stanley is on standby to make his Cougar debut.

Moorby added: "It was a very pleasing win last week. We showed plenty of character to come back as we did and I think that's a huge step forward.

"There's still plenty to work on, but the players' response has been terrific.

"I'm not one for singling out individuals but Matty Firth is beginning to find his feet and is directing our play very well. Danny Fearon is another who is coming good and displaying some superb handling skills, and Paul Ashton is providing exceptional pace and spark when we need it.

"It was great to see an increase in the crowd again, and the Cougar roar brought back some memories for many - keep it up."
