Planners have ordered the demolition of a family home because it was built without permission in a special landscape area.

They want road haulier Roger Feather to pull down the wooden, single storey house in the grounds of Laveroc Hall Farm at Flappit Springs near Keighley.

Mr Feather, who lives at the house, off Haworth Road, with his wife and two young children, has appealed to the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions to overthrow the order.

"It's a temporary dwelling which I put up while we are renovating the farm," said Mr Feather.

He said he was also in dispute with Bradford Council planners about the restoration and modernisation of Laveroc Hall Farm, which he intends moving into with his wife, children and parents when completed.

A Council spokesman said: "Planning permission for the wooden chalet type building was never sought. The first time we knew it was there was in the spring of 2001 when we were informed by a resident.

"A retrospective application was made but was refused."

He said the wooden building, which was a substantial house, should have been demolished by February 21.

Planners were also unhappy with the work on Laveroc Hall and its barn, which had planning permission for conversion into a house.

The spokesman said the work was so different from the original plans in size and design, that it was considered to be a new building.

Mr Feather, who runs Cullingworth Commercials, said: "The idea was to stay in the wooden house while we finished Laveroc Hall Farm.

"We have 17 acres of land here and we didn't want to live close to the building work among the scaffolding and workmen. I have young children and I didn't think it was safe.

"When we bought the farm it was a ram-shackle eyesore - it was like a scrap yard. We have made big improvements."

Mr Feather is now hoping that a compromise could be reached with planners.

He said the temporary wooden building was hidden away behind a belt of trees and could only be seen from the farm buildings.

Planning consultant Rod Morris who is negotiating with City Hall planners on Mr Feather's behalf, said: "Negotiations are at a critical stage. I don't want to say anything that might prejudice them."

The appeal hearing will be dealt with by a DETR inspector.
