SIR - In the debate about the Odsal Stadium project being referred to a public inquiry, the great and the good have been voicing their support of the scheme and Bradford Council has stated that it is prepared to spend millions on legal input to the inquiry. Why?

This scheme, as I understand it, will benefit both Tesco and Bradford Bulls which are both private concerns. So why should council taxpayers' money be spent?

Of course Bradford Bulls will insist on calling themselves "the people's team" but from my viewpoint the only way they merit this title is by using up huge amounts of public money.

Of course the Bulls do a huge amount of work in the community. But the funds for these projects come from a number of sources and money input from the Bulls directly, if at all, is minuscule.

We live in an age when public spending is closely monitored and value for money is the watchword. There's a perfectly good stadium at Valley Parade for the Bulls to play at and if this is not good enough then let them fund their own.

Public money should not be spent supporting professional sports clubs but on fully public amenities throughout the district.

SIR - N Deacon has at least got one point right in his recent letter (March 4). Nobody expects the Odsal scheme to go ahead.

He makes a rather ill-advised snipe at Bradford City's "delusions of grandeur". Presumably he is somewhat envious of my club's desire, ambition and ability to refurbish their own ground with minimal fuss.

He may be unaware that our "poky little home" is seen as being more than suitable by the Football Association to hold an England Under-21 game there later this month.

As far as I am aware, the Rugby League has not given Odsal any similar prestigious event in the last few years, nor will they be doing so for the foreseeable future.

The majority of Bradford City fans want to see the Bulls do well, but this goodwill will surely evaporate when we read such remarks from our guests about our stadium.

Kevin Halligan, Radfield Drive, Odsal.

SIR - I feel I must write to defend Bradford City's Valley Parade ground. It seems Bradford Bulls fans feel as if they are too good for the facilities provided. They would much rather stand out in the open at Odsal, or in the lovely surroundings of Wakefield, Salford or the grandiose Halifax.

As a club Bradford City have gone out of their way for the Bulls (for little financial reward according to Mr. Richmond). They expect Bradford taxpayers to pay for them to stay at Odsal. Let Mr Caisley dip into his pocket and provide the "superdome" they deserve. Why should the people of Bradford pay for a private company and receive none of the profits?

Mick Dawson, Astral View, Wibsey

SIR - If Bradford people want a new stadium, fine. If Bulls fans want a new stadium, go for it.

But don't expect the people of Silsden, Keighley, Haworth, Bingley, Addingham and all the other towns and villages that Bradford Council exploits in order to raise funds to pay for it!

I believe I speak for a great many ratepayers when I say enough is enough. Fund your own park festivals as well.

Martin Whiteley, Grange Road, Riddlesden, Keighley

SIR - So Morrisons Supermarkets have submitted their objection to the Odsal Stadium redevelopment plan.

Did it escape anybody's notice how many Bulls fans, with flags waving, were filling up in Morrisons forecourts en-route to the Wigan match last Friday?

Not me...

SIR - Yet again the T&A Court File is overwhelmed with cases of driving without insurance or licence or with faulty vehicles. Perhaps a publicity drive in the appropriate languages is needed to stop this obviously established behaviour in some sections of the community.
