Gainsborough Trinity 5, Guiseley 1 - Guiseley's last hope of landing some silverware this season was dashed on Saturday by a heavy defeat in the UniBond League's President's Cup competition at Gainsborough Trinity.

The Premier Division side's Lee Ellington returned from injury and bagged a hat-trick as they swamped their Division One visitors in a solid second half performance in this semi-final. Neil Parsley's men had performed manfully and though they were 2-0 adrift at half time a comeback could not be ruled out.

They got back into the game just four minutes after the interval when the prolific Ryan Senior netted yet again to make it 2-1 but minutes later Gainsborough had restored their two goal cushion and never looked back.

Darren Connell opened the scoring for Trinity when he headed home from a set piece midway through the first half. Just after the half hour Ellington netted his first, a cross was deflected into his path and he fired past John Lamb.

Guiseley got off to a great start in the second half and it took them four minutes to peg the home side back. David Cooke broke down the right and his cross was headed down by Mark Stuart for Senior to blast in from eight yards.

"If we could have held them for five minutes at that point I'm sure we would have got back into it, the next goal at that stage was crucial and I'm afraid it was they who scored it," said Guiseley director Stuart Allen.

In fact it took the home side just two minutes to pull away once more, Ellington grabbed his second and had reached the treble before the hour. Chris Hurst wrapped up the scoring in the 65th minute.

Parsley will have to lift his men for tonight's home league game. Matlock Town visit Nethermoor and Parsley names the same 16 who were in Saturday's squad.
