A newly formed school band hit a high note when it performed in concert for the first time.

The 20 members of Nessfield Primary School band, aged eight to 11, performed for an appreciative audience of parents and classmates.

Since the schools' re-organisation changed Nessfield from a small first school to a large primary school, members of staff have been working hard to form a new school band.

And under the guidance of teachers Graham Clarke, Janet Fotherby and Anne Hobson, the group of talented musical youngsters have been playing in harmony.

"I'm really pleased with the progress the children have made," said Mr Clarke. "The concert includes established pieces and some original work from the staff."

Head teacher Sandra Antcliffe added: "It's wonderful to listen to the children performing. It's so important that creative subjects like music are not squeezed out of the curriculum. We place a high priority on music teaching at Nessfield Primary School."

The youngsters practise for an hour after school every week and play a variety of instruments including clarinets, flutes, trumpets, guitars and recorders.

The majority of children have music lessons in school provided by Bradford Music Service.

The one exception is harp player Rebecca Peers, who receives private lessons.
