THEATRE: The Wizard of Oz
Think of the Wizard of Oz and you are taken back to childhood Christmases and Judy Garland skipping through a magical technicolor dreamworld.
Fortunately the West Yorkshire Playhouse has managed to capture the colour, wonder and humour of the film version - and added a bit more, too.
When Dorothy and her dog Toto run away from home a storm hits and they are catapulted into the land of Oz.
Their journey along the Yellow Brick Road is a real hoot, especially when Dorothy meets the munchkins.
All of the famous songs are belted out with real verve and it even becomes like panto when everyone starts hissing the wicked witch.
The whole cast is mighty fine with Charlie Hayes perfect in the role of Dorothy and Patrick Stewart suitably nasty as the virtual Wizard of Oz.
The inventive special effects created by Mic Pool and the weird and wonderful puppets designed by John Barber work perfectly and add both humour and atmosphere.
Director Jude Kelly has delivered delightful feel-good entertainment for all ages.
The Wizard of Oz runs until April 16. For details call 01132137700
