The countdown has begun for the start of the 2002 bowling season and it gets under way locally at Silsden Bowling Club on March 17, with the open doubles event sponsored by local tradesmen. Finals are on March 24, entries to Barry Turnbull as soon as possible on 653958.

The Worth Valley League commences in April and early fixtures include the Valley Cup KO event, featuring holder Cross Roads A who play Oakworth B. Changes in the hierarchy of the Valley Association sees Roy Sanderson, a former Secretary, replacing Eric Holmes as Chairman and Tina Balmforth taking over financial affairs as Treasurer. New committee members are Steffi Sexton, Viv Ambrose and Mick Hayley.

Roy himself is basking in his new found popularity as he is now also President of the Skipton league for the next two seasons, taking over from Sue Spencer. He was the holder of the prestigious position over twenty years ago and he happens to play a bigger part in his role this time around. David Ellis of Gargrave was elected as Vice President.

The Skipton season begins on April 23 with the usual three league set up, boasting 16 teams in each section and various cup and team events throughout the summer.

Whatever happens, your loving reporter will be on hand to bring you up-to-date reports on all major matches.

Sadly missing from the scene will be the following who have all passed away in the close season. The game will not be the same without them. Roy Norman of Whinfield was well known in the Keighley area and played, virtually, unbeaten at home, for many years.

The respected Colin Greenwood also played for Whinfield and his home club Cullingworth also for many seasons and came from a well known bowling family. Chirpy Billy Woodwiss was well known locally and played for both Highfield and Keighley. Further afield, Derek Myers was well known in the Shipley and Bradford areas and Les Pridgeon was President of the Hebden League.

Condolences to all the families concerned.
