SIR - A couple of weeks ago, the T&A carried a feature highlighting the obvious dangers of not wearing car seatbelts, particularly for child passengers. There was a photograph and lots of powerful arguments for complying with the law, and I thought, "about time".

Since then I have been naively looking for signs of improvement on Bradford's roads. Sadly, things are as bad as ever.

Stand on any kerbside in Manningham or Heaton and you will see horrifying evidence of this - children standing on back-seats, children being held on parents' laps in the front, children with their heads sticking out of windows. In some cases the driver has his or her own belt on but their kids are bouncing around unrestrained!

Is it ignorance of the law or do some drivers believe a greater power than child-seats and inertia belts are protecting them and their children? And where are the police? If it's illegal, it's illegal and that's that. Does anyone know of any prosecutions in Bradford for this offence?

Andrew Milne, Randall Place, Heaton.

SIR - Re Clive Richardson's letter supporting the removal of original paving stones from Market Street, Thornton (March 4).

As Councillor Richardson is a member of the Bronte Birthplace Association, and claims to be a conservationist, I'm very surprised that he approves that the original setts are being covered in tarmac despite local opposition.

Market Street is supposed to be a conservation area. Why then have Bradford Council made the narrow Old Street into a one-way thoroughfare where several children have already been knocked down by cars? Have the Council no imagination?

Market Street should be a no-car zone and a car park made accessible for residents. Market Street car park could easily be enlarged now that the school has been closed, and the land at the top of Ball Street could be used.

J P W Kerrigan, Back High Street, Thornton.

SIR - Councillor Colin Gill (Con, Bingley) admits participating in a process that put renewal funds in his own area while excluding areas that need it most. He says deprivation is not confined to one place, but his own party's national spokesperson said "...poverty is increasingly geographical..." and that Tories need to do more about it.

Councillor Miller (Labour, Shipley East) never said his ward should get everything, only that something is wrong when it gets nothing.

On the Area Panel, Coun Gill should act for all of Shipley, not his own political self-interest.

Eileen Sinclair, Evergreen Walk, Bingley.

SIR - I am obviously angry over the jeopardy that the Odsal development has been put in, but I am even angrier with Sir Ken Morr-ison's reasons for objecting to it.

How Sir Ken (pictured) has the gall to state concern for other retail centres is beyond belief.

It was thanks to the loyalty of the people of Bradford that he and his father built their empire, riding roughshod over every small corner shop in Bradford.

There was no concern shown to the people who lost their livelihoods because of this.

This loyalty has now been given a kick in the teeth. I am another customer who will no longer shop at Morrisons stores.

My shopping bill would not be missed, but I hope Sir Ken finds that the loyalty of Bradford Bulls fans and their families to their club can be a powerful tool.

J Dine, Ladore Road, Bradford 2.

SIR - Odsal stadium needs protecting. Odsal is our home, the Bulls' home, home of Rugby League, home of the world champions.

We are not asking for the earth, just to have the Odsal Stadium that we deserve. Tesco's are willing to put money into Bradford and help us return home.

The opposition to it is sheer greed. Grab, grab, grab, and don't put back.

The people of Bradford have helped to put Sir Ken Morrison where he is today!

How many supermarkets do Morrison's have in Bradford? Five?

How many do Tesco's have? Two. So, Sir Ken, put up or shut up!

Help, not hinder, your fellow Bradfordians, like we helped you, and continue to do so...

If not, I will seriously think about where my loyalties lie in future.

Tommy Brown, Clayton Lane, Clayton, Bradford.

SIR - The constant bickering between City fans and Bulls fans has to stop. As a disabled supporter, I know the problems that can occur at Valley Parade. It is no Odsal but at least it is a comfortable and well-equipped arena which has seen a Bulls golden year.

"The Cage", as it is known by those who attend matches, got its name for being a very intimidating place to play the Bulls. As a fan you are nearer the action and the team can hear the fans.

I was as devastated as any fan when the Odsal development fell through but at least we are playing here in Bradford. If we did not have Valley Parade, where would we play?

The Bradford Bulls do deserve to have Odsal brought up to the standard of - say - the JJB stadium, but as fans we should appreciate that Bradford City are accommodating us and the team. Whatever the financial benefits are to them, they do deserve our thanks.

Let's run with the Bulls, not get them evicted.

Mrs G Johnson (regular in the north-west corner), Owlet Road, Shipley.

SIR - I sympathise with the sentiments of what David Pendleton has to say about some Bulls supporters at Valley Parade.

However, he is wrong to say that Valley Parade was built without a penny coming from the public purse.

I believe the West Yorkshire ratepayers subsidised the re-building of Valley Parade to the tune of £1,400,000 after the dreadful fire. I do not know how much that would be in today's terms.

Chairman Geoffrey Richmond has extended that building quite magnificently.

Iain Morris, Caroline Street, Saltaire.

SIR - I have read in the T&A that Leeds-Bradford Airport is introducing new destinations to Cork, Edinburgh etc from May.

Isn't it about time we had more holiday flights to the Greek mainland and islands, also to the Costa-del-Almeria etc so that people living this side of the Pennines don't have to make the horrible journey to Manchester?

Mrs A Webster, Beech Close, Thackley.

SIR - I lost my scarf during a visit to IMAX (the Shackleton film is excellent, by the way). Not only did I receive a phone call to advise it had been found, but it was sent on to me. Excellent customer service. I have told them I will return the cost of the postage, so they are not out of pocket.

F Birtwhistle, Wellington Street, Wilsden.
