Keighley Community Transport is relocating because staff have had enough of the persistent attacks on themselves and the vehicles.

In recent months they have been pelted with stones and bricks at the charity headquarters in Holycroft Street.

Bosses at the organisation decided that the on-going problem of nuisance youths meant they would have to relocate to Becks Road. The new premises, behind Morrisons, will be more secure and allow buses to be parked under cover.

Transport organiser Stephen Shorten said: "The bill to repair damage caused by these yobs has run into thousands of pounds, and it has affected our insurance premiums."

He reported that it was a gang of about five youths, aged between 12 and 16, who were causing the trouble.

Since October last year Mr Shorten has seen cars being damaged and broken into, racial abuse, volunteers being stoned, fireworks thrown at staff, eggs hurled at the buses and mirrors and windows being broken.

"Staff were worried about their safety and about their cars," he said. "Everyone thinks it will be a good move and will feel more comfortable.

"To some extent it means these kids have won, but safety is a genuine concern and we had to act for our workers.

"We don't feel we've had help from anybody, although the police POP team has been around a lot more and trouble has dipped.

"We just wanted to get out and find somewhere else without all this hassle," he said.
