The millions of Jews murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust have been remembered in Bradford.

At the city's Cenotaph yesterday afternoon, the annual Holocaust Memorial Mee-ing, organised by Bradford Trades Union Council, marked the anniversary of the Allied liberation of the Belsen concentration camp.

Readings recalling the horrors of the Holocaust were given by the leaders of Bradford Council Conserv-ative, Labour and Green groups as well as Council leader Coun Margaret Eaton, the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Coun Ghazanfer Khaliq, and Bradford West Labour MP Marsha Singh.

Ken Fabian, of the Bradford Synagogue, also gave a reading before members of the public laid flowers at the Cenotaph. The event was followed by a lecture on racism and fascism, given by Professor Colin Holmes at Bradford Resource Centre where six candles were lit - one for every million Jews killed by the Nazis.

The Lord Mayor said: "It's right that we should be challenged to remember the destructive forces that can take over when other people's differences are taken as a reason to hate rather than to celebrate.''

Mr Fabian said: "It's only by remembering what's happened in the past that we can hope to ensure it never happens again.''

Ronnie Fieldhouse, president of Bradford TUC, said the far right's recent success in France and other European countries meant the importance of remembering the Holocaust was as great as ever. Nine-year-old Reuben Shapland is pictured placing flowers at the Cenotaph.
