A teenage driver suffered serious injuries when he was thrown out of his van when it went out of control.

The 19-year-old, who has not been named, was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary after the accident on the B6144 Haworth Road at Harecroft.

The accident happened at 4.07pm yesterday near to the junction with Bents Lane and involved just one vehicle - a white Peugeot van.

The road was closed in both directions afterwards and traffic was diverted via Whalley Lane and Old Allen Road causing one-mile tailbacks.

The van was travelling towards Bradford when it left the road.

The driver, who is from Bradford, was thrown from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. No other vehicle was believed to be involved.

Meanwhile, two other people were taken to hospital with minor injuries after another road traffic accident yesterday.

Eyewitnesses said a red Transit van was trying to overtake a red Citroen Saxo, pictured, when the incident occurred in Smiddles Lane, Bradford, at 2.08pm yesterday.

Two people were arrested at the scene after it was discovered they were wanted on a warrant by police for burglary in Oldham.

It is believed the incident also involved a tractor and the Saxo, which was travelling in the direction of Manchester Road, crashed into a tree and a lamp post at the road's junction with Dovesdale Road.

Maureen Wilkes, 61, who lives opposite the scene of the accident in Smiddles Lane, said: "It was horrendous.

"I never want to hear a sound like that again, it was very scary.

"We have been saying there will have to be a death before anything is done about this road. It is not the first time something like this has happened."

Smiddles Lane was closed until 5.10pm while paramedics took the casualties to hospital and the cars were removed. Traffic was diverted down Hutton Road, past Priestman School and also along Thornton Lane.

A police investigation team was at the scene of the accident, assessing what happened.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police, said: "One male passenger suffered serious head injuries but they are not thought to be life threatening. One female passenger also suffered serious injuries.

"Both were taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary."
