Ilkley Reserves 1,Sherwood 3: Having won promotion from Harrogate League Division Three some weeks ago, the Guyson sponsored Ilkley Reserves faced a dramatic winner-takes-all title clash against Harrogate based side Sherwood.

In a wind affected scrappy encounter Sherwood ran out winners, as Ilkley's long unbeaten run stretching back to September came to an end.

Playing against the wind in the first-half Ilkley started sharply and Austin's early through ball released Horne past his marker. Bearing down on goal it seemed apparent that Ilkley would have the first goal scoring opportunity of the game until Sherwood's defender pulled Horne back. Inexplicably the referee failed to award a penalty. Further good pressure was exerted on the Sherwood goal during the opening quarter of an hour as Ilkley sought to impose themselves on their opponents.

As the half drew on Sherwood began to dominate proceedings; with the wind in their favour and a greater physical presence they found it easier to regain possession.

Often this was wasted as a series of long balls missed their intended recipient and drifted out of play or were tidied up by Dorrill in goal. Ilkley defended well with the back four of Taylor, Beaumont, Sayers and McTigue judging the flight of balls well to make headed clearances whilst covering players made sure any danger could be dealt with.

On 20 minutes Sherwood took the lead from a corner. The resulting kick was misjudged in flight by 'keeper Dorrill who could only palm the ball onto the hand of Houlston at the far post.

The resulting penalty was converted. Worse was to come when this lead was doubled. Another long ball towards the penalty area was half cleared only for it to be returned on the volley past Dorrill at the front post.

Ilkley rallied and hard work by Houlston, Giles and Airey in midfield nearly produced openings for Smith and Horne to score.

Just before half-time Sherwood could have gone further ahead when another penalty was awarded for a trip in the box. Dorrill kept his side in the game and reacted well to save the spot kick.

Sherwood wrapped up the victory with ten minutes remaining when persistence from their forwards was rewarded with a neat finish.

With five minutes to go Ilkley sparked memories of the memorable come back against Park Row when Giles headed in Smith's corner, however this proved only to be a consolation goal.

In gaining promotion the players have demonstrated what strength in depth the club has at senior level in their first season in the Harrogate League. Former juniors Duttine, Ratcliffe, Airey, Dorrill and Austin have successfully breached the gap between junior and senior football and have made the club a good deal stronger in doing so.

The presentation night will take place at the Hollygarth on Thursday, May 9, at 8pm.
