It is not pleasant to have a large lorry parked in front of your house, blocking your view and casting its shadow. It is even less pleasant if you feel that the presence of the driver in that lorry is an invasion of your privacy.

Yet that is the situation in which residents in Albion Road and Leeds Road at lower Idle find themselves at present, with lorries from as far afield as Turkey and Croatia parked outside their homes through the night as the drivers wait for gates to the nearby Parkland Business Centre to be unlocked in the morning.

It is a tricky problem to solve. The lorry drivers, many of them travelling great distances, cannot always arrange to arrive at a convenient time during the day.

For security reasons the business centre understandably does not want to leave the gates unlocked to enable the drivers to park inside. And yet the residents quite reasonably resent the inconvenience caused and the intrusion into their lives.

In too many cases there are conflicts of interest between householders and local businesses which remain unresolved. However, it is encouraging that in this instance at least there seems to be a civilised spirit of co-operation between the two sides.

The business centre says it understands the residents' concerns, meetings have been held between the two sides with the help of local councillor Jeanette Sunderland, and a working group has been set up in a bid to find a solution.

It is to be hoped that a happy compromise can be reached soon and that a precedent will be set that could be followed when other similar disputes arise elsewhere.
