A pensioner today told how she was rushed to hospital with suspected heart trouble after burglars attempted to break into her home.

Kathleen Carlton, pictured, was asleep in her bungalow when a large rock crashed through her bathroom window at around 4am on Monday.

The intruders were disturbed by Mrs Carlton, of Buttershaw, Bradford, after she was awoken by the crash and they ran away without entering the property.

But the terrified 62-year-old, who suffers from angina, said she had to ring her emergency doctor later that morning after experiencing chest pains and losing all feeling in her right arm.

Mrs Carlton, who lives on her own, was rushed to hospital in an ambulance but sent home later that day.

Mrs Carlton said the incident had left her "frightened to death" and afraid to leave her house.

"At present I am feeling very stressed out. I've started sleeping in the day time and staying up at night as I don't know if they'll return. I was told by the police they may have been trying to get into the house to get the keys to my car.

"I think there was more than one of them because the boulder they threw through my window was massive."

The burglars returned on Tuesday while she was out but failed to break in despite causing damage to her back door.

"I've lived in the house for five years and have never experienced any trouble before," she said. "It has all been horrific and the boulder that came flying through the window has caused so much damage that I need to get a new bath."

l A 20-year-old male has been arrested in connection with attempted burglaries. He was released on police bail pending further inquiries.
