Keighley's police chief has vowed to continue the war on hard drug dealers following the launch of a major blitz last week.

Over the last eight days police officers, part of Bradford's new district-wide drugs team, have pounced on dealers in a series of raids across the district, making a number of arrests.

The raids, involving up to 40 policemen and women, netted substantial quantities of drugs, including heroin, crack cocaine and ecstasy.

Chief Supt Graham Sunderland said: "The first operation was a great success and reflects our commitment in tackling drug dealing and the crime associated with it.

"We are determined to continue this fight against the drugs menace."

The Keighley police chief, who has promised to arrest at least 200 drug dealers across the district by the end of the year, also appealed to the public for help in the crack down.

In the first week of the Crackdown campaign police made several arrests in the Keighley district.

In the early hours of last Friday police discovered a quantity of cannabis and around 100 tablets, believed to be ecstasy, after stopping and searching a car in Bingley.

A 22-year-old man from Eldwick has been bailed, to report back to the police station on suspicion of possession with intent to supply, while police carry out forensic tests. At an address in Leyland House, Parkwood Rise, on Monday, police apprehended a 36-year-old man who was bailed to appear before magistrates on Wednesday.

l Keighley police made 19 arrests in seven days in the major operation launched last week.

The arrests -- for a variety of offences -- included seven for robbery. Officers also carried out crime prevention leaflet drops in robbery hot spot areas, advising people what steps they could take to make themselves less vulnerable.

During the week, 54 people and vehicles were stopped and searched.
