Rugby legend Trevor Foster will be immortalised in Odsal where a street is to be named after him.

Trevor Foster Way will be an access road to a new industrial development close to the Staygate Roundabout.

Its namesake was arguably Bradford's greatest rugby forward, who helped Bradford Northern clinch three Wembley finals in the late 1940s.

The idea was put forward by Councillor David Green (Lab, Odsal) and was rubber-stamped at the Bradford South area committee meeting last night. Coun Green said: "The developers were suggesting the name Staygate, which is not only boring but also confusing as there is a Staithgate Lane and Staygate Roundabout.

"Trevor Foster is probably the most famous rugby player of all time in the UK and is certainly the most famous to be produced by Bradford Northern.

"Since he retired, he has continued to be highly involved in the city's rugby league and was part of the rescue bid for the club when it went bankrupt in the '80s.

"He is a great ambassador for Bradford," said Coun Green. "This road is 100 yards from the Odsal Stadium, which will reflect his contribution to the local community and rugby league."

A Bradford Council spokesman added that the naming idea would also have to be approved by the Bradford North Area Panel on August 15, because part of the road passes into its area of responsibility.

Trevor is no stranger to honours. Last week he was given an honorary doctorate from Bradford University and he also has a lounge at Odsal Stadium named after him.

Stuart Duffy, Bradford Bulls spokesman, said: "It is a fitting honour for Trevor, who is legendary in Bradford.

"His services to the city and the club are second to none.

"It is a proud day for Trevor and the club."
