A DJ inspired by his dying girlfriend has produced his first record - and is hoping proceeds will help a girl who needs artificial limbs.

Michael Roberts, of Cullingworth, looked after his girlfriend Jill Rothwell who was dying of cancer.

He said her gentle nature led him to think of others and he felt that donating money from his first single would be a fitting tribute to her.

"I never thought about anyone else before - it was Jill who taught me to think of others and also to follow my dream.

"Thanks to her I have got where I am today."

He said he was thrilled to be helping 16-year-old Laura Campbell, whom he read about in the Telegraph & Argus.

Laura, of Chapel Grove, Crossflatts, suffers from a rare condition called Thrombocytopenia Radial Aplasia and had both legs amputated when she was 18 months old.

Her friends started an appeal to raise money for two limbs similar to those worn by Paul McCartney's wife Heather Mills.

Mr Roberts, known as DJ Mick Dundee, said: "I heard that Laura is only 16 and she deserves a boost. Hopefully the record can raise a bit of money for her."

The record, which has been provisionally titled El Nino, is a trance track. He is hoping it will be as big a hit as a track by his mentor, James Sammon, called Boys and Girls, which reached number six in the charts in 1996.

Mr Roberts, who also DJs on BCB 96.7FM every Friday night, said: "I recorded the track at James's studio. He's been brilliant helping me get started. I am very proud of the record and I hope it will be a big dance hit."

Laura's mother Christine thanked Mr Roberts for his offer.

"It's absolutely brilliant that this gentleman is thinking of Laura," she said.

"It's overwhelming how kind people have been. It's just amazing."

Mrs Campbell said that more than £6,000 had been raised for the fund.

Laura, a pupil at Bingley Grammar School, said she was delighted.

"That's brilliant. It's so nice that people want to help," she said.

The record is due to be released soon.
