Billingham Synthonia 2, Bradford Park Avenue 1 - A Pele-style wonder goal was the only highlight in a frustrating venture up the A1 for Bradford Park Avenue.

The UniBond side's new striker, Robbie Painter, will be angling for a pay rise after grabbing his second goal in

three run-outs, a magnificent strike from the half-way line after just 20 seconds.

Although Avenue took the lead almost straight from kick-off, the former Football League player spotting the keeper off his line, they went down 2-1 at Billingham Synthonia's Central Avenue ground.

"I must say it was disappointing," said manager Trevor Storton after the game, arranged by his assistant Ian Thompson.

"After the way we have played in other two games, it wasn't what I wanted to see."

Avenue, who put in good opening performances against Hull City and Rotherham United in recent weeks, had five key players out for the clash and it showed.

"We had a few lads out and we just didn't really get into the game," said Storton.

"It was like their cup final, they were really up for it and we just couldn't match them on that front.

"They were playing against a big club and that is how they performed, they showed the desire that we displayed against league opposition in recent games."

With Andy Hayward, Rory Prendergast, Gareth Holmes, James Stansfield and Neil Grayston all out, it was a far from Avenue's strongest side on display.

But there were some positives for Storton to pick out.

"I thought Robbie Painter was very good again," said the manager, still looking to strengthen his squad in a number of key positions.

"He has showed a lot of class in the last three games and I am very pleased with his contribution for us so far."

Keeper Joel Armstrong did not have a lot to do apart from the goals, but Storton feels that his new stopper could prove a useful player in the upcoming UniBond campaign.

"Joel was released by Chesterfield and that has really knocked his confidence," he said.

"I think his head is in bits, it is always tough for these young lads when clubs let them go. I don't think we are going to see the best of him for a few weeks, but I still think he can do a job."

Storton is hoping to put out a stronger side for the visit of Bradford City on Wednesday at Horsfall Stadium.

l Wing wizard Rory Prendergast is confident he will be fit for the start of the league campaign.

He broke his collar bone after being on the receiving end of an agricultural tackle against Rotherham and although doctors recommend a five-week lay-off, the former Frickley player believes

he will be able to return to action in three.
