BURLEY-in-Wharfedale teenager Will Musgrave has competed in his second International Hockey Tournament of the year at Under-16 level.

The Ilkley Grammar School pupil who plays his hockey for the Ben Rhydding club, played in the First European U-16/U-18 Nations Cup at HC Rotterdam with teams from eight countries.

HC Rotterdam can boast over 2,000 members and with three water and four sand-based Astro-turf pitches is probably the best facility in Europe.

England's pool games were against Belgium, Poland and Germany and they got off to a good start beating Belgium 2-0 with Will scoring the first goal. They then beat Poland 11-0 but the crunch game was always going to be against Germany. England had beaten them 4-3 in Manchester at Easter but were not able to repeat this effort going down 3-2 in a closely-fought game.

England then had to play off against Holland and France to secure a medal. Holland, the pre-tournament favourites, were very confident on home soil and went 2-0 up. England then produced what was probably one of the best goals of the tournament with Will coming in from the left to strike the ball past the 'keeper. This gave England some hope but this was quickly dashed when the Dutch scored two more goals in quick succession to wrap the game up at 5-1.

This now meant that England had to draw with or beat France for the bronze medals. The French scored first but the quality of the England side started to show through and midway through the second-half England were in control. They ran out 4-2 winners taking the bronze with the gold going to Germany and the silver to France.

Will finished the season with nine international caps and four goals to his credit. He now embarks on the Under-18 Assessment Programme which starts at the end of August.
