Oxenhope Straw Race is set to create another bumper harvest for local charities.

Organisers of the annual event - launched 27 years ago - have hailed Sunday's extravaganza a huge success.

They hope that despite a slight drop in entrants, the amount raised through sponsorship will be close to the £10,000-or-so realised in recent years.

It is believed that the cancellation of last year's race due to the foot and mouth crisis may have affected the number of teams taking part this time.

Also, the rescheduling of this summer's event to avoid clashing with the football World Cup final moved it away from its traditional early slot.

Race spokesman Adrian Bebb said: "We had 130 teams take part, which is slightly down, but we were still very pleased with the response.

"A lot of people would have put money on the race not happening again this year following foot and mouth, but the fact is we're back. We had great weather on Sunday and a lot of spectators, and everyone seemed to enjoy it."

Since its launch the event has raised over £200,000 for charitable causes. Organisations which have benefited include Manorlands, Keighley Resource Centre and Lungs for Life.

The race involves two-strong teams running from pub to pub carrying a bale of straw.

The teams, many of them in fancy dress, have to down a drink at each pub.
