Think about grapes bulging on the vine and the images that spring to mind are of picturesque corners of France or sun-drenched fields in Australia.

Now add to that list a small front garden in Highfield, Keighley. When seven-year-old Mohammed Ali received a small vine as a present three years ago he had no idea it would grow.

But just as in Jack and the Beanstalk, the Eastwood Primary School pupil has watched the plant shoot up, to the point where it now dominates the front of his family's home in Highfield Street. The vine, which has even started to produce black grapes, has become a talking point in the community, with people turning up at the house.

Dad Fazal Khan, 50, said: "During the first couple of years it grew quite a lot, but this year it has really spread. We've had a lot of people coming to see how we have managed to grow the vine, including a friend who came from Birmingham because he was interested.

"I think everyone is really surprised that we have been able to grow it in this country with the climate we have.

"A friend has just moved to Spain and she has taken a branch with her to start growing her own vine."

Fazal, a bilingual teaching assistant at Eastwood Primary School, says there was no secret method to growing the vine, just water and plant food.

He adds: "We were getting no grapes but then someone told us we had to cut the branches at the end of February. After we did that they started to appear."

The family has ruled out opening up its own Keighley winery and is instead content to welcome visitors to their home with a home-grown grape.
