A man from Haworth has created all the fun of the fair in miniature for the Keighley Amateurs' forthcoming production of Scrooge.

The props department hit a problem when they needed to make a miniature carousel for the family musical production.

They considered different ways to make the model, which was needed for toy shop scenes, but couldn't find the perfect solution.

Peter Greenwood, who is part of the production team and who will perform a Punch and Judy show in the performance, said: "I suddenly realised that my brother-in-law, Alan Sayer, might just be the man for the job."

And indeed he was. A former engineer, Mr Sayer, of Charlotte's Court, ordered a kit pattern for the piece and started work on it on September 1.

He said: "People could spend a year on a project like this, but because of the deadline with the play starting I had to get it done in five weeks.

"I've spent at least 100 hours on it with help from my wife, Doris."

The model of the colourful old-fashioned carousel is made from about 840 pieces, which had to be painstakingly glued together, then fitted into place.

Mr Sayer added: "I got through seven tubes of PVC glue and it was a real test of patience.

"I enjoy doing jig-saw puzzles but I've never done anything quite like this before -- I'm not sure I could again!"

Mr Sayer adapted the model with a small motor so that it turns to music without having to be wound by hand.

Mr Greenwood said: "This has saved Keighley Amateurs a huge amount of money and its fantastic. It looks incredible and Alan's done an excellent job."

Scrooge is at Victoria Hall from October 14 - 19, including a Saturday matinee. Tickets can be booked at Keighley Information Centre in the town hall.
