TELEVISION actor Clive Hornby, who plays Jack Sugden in the soap opera Emmerdale turned up to support Ilkley's Cancer Research UK shop as it opened following a major refurbishment.

Theoverhaul had included a new floor, till point, and painted walls to create a more modern look.

Manager Elaine Hildreth said: "The shop already has a friendly atmosphere thanks to its dedicated team, now they will be accompanied by a visually pleasing environment. It will be a community event as it is all round support that keeps things running smoothly.

"It is crucial that our shop draws people in, as each and every item sold raises money towards vital cancer research. It is hoped that the shop's 'makeover' will be extremely constructive in the long run, and will serve to entice folk to its doors as either volunteer, donator or customer."

The store, on The Grove, has also entered its Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To show support, pink ribbons are available for £1 and 'precious' puppies are available for £4.99.

Cancer Research UK is the largest independent research organisation in the world. The charity funds more than 3,000 scientists, doctors and nurses based throughout the UK. For 2002/2002, the total spent on research will be £176 million.
