Rawdon racer Rob Griffiths survived an early-race scare to claim a top ten finish at Brands Hatch in the final round of the IGC Caterham Superlight Challenge.

Rob was one of several drivers to fall foul of some oil dropped on the track after a crash; championship victor Barry Horne was one of those who sailed straight off the circuit and into retirement.

Griffiths nearly joined Horne in the gravel trap when he found the oil but managed to get his car going again, albeit having lost several places with his spin.

Rob fought on to the finish and eighth place.

Griffiths finished the season in sixth place overall in the championship standings, and was the highest-placed privateer driver.

The race was won by Essex driver John Gladman, the master of the last-lap sprint for the chequered flag, who pipped his namesake Philip Gladman by just .049 of a second.

It was John's second win of the year for the Taylor's Foundry team - he also won the opening round in similar breathtaking style - and it brings him level on points with newly crowned champion Barry Horne.

Horne, who slithered out of the lead on the second lap at Brands Hatch after hitting an oil patch, wins the tie-break by dint of his greater number of race victories.

The IGC Caterham Superlight Challenge in association with Autosport enjoys the backing of Mitchell Coutts, MG Xpower, Stack, Bilstein, Minister, Arch Motors, Comma and Cooper-Avon Tyres.

Provisional final championship placings: 1, Barry Horne (Dunfer-mline), 176 points; 2, John Gladman (Benflee), 176; 3, Keith Robinson (Camberley), 131; 4, Jason Sutherland (Caterham), 125; 5, Luc Paillard (Sevenoaks), 112; 6, Rob Griffiths (Rawdon), 110.
