Alfreton Town 5

Guiseley 0

A Glaring early miss by their leading scorer Mark Stuart set the tone for this FA Trophy tie on Saturday.

Guiseley had hoped for a good run in the Trophy to match that enjoyed in the FA Cup but their dreams were left in tatters with an inept display when facing the UniBond Division One leaders.

The heavy defeat was compounded by Guiseley's inability to convert their chances. They once again created a mass of chances but failed to take advantage but their general all round play left a lot to be desired.

The home 'keeper saved with his legs from Stuart after the former Bradford City winger was put through one-on-one in the seventh minute by Dave Henry.

It took Alfreton just 60 seconds to respond but they made their chance count with Mick Godber opening the scoring.

A cross from the right in the 32nd minute was turned over Guiseley 'keeper James Shutt by his own defender Gary Shaw as the former Eccleshill and Farsley man tried to clear.

Alfreton went 3-0 up when Chris Bettney netted six minutes before the break.

Guiseley had their chances with David Cooke and Ryan Senior going close. Senior also had a shot saved and one fractionally off target. The big man has now gone 13 games without scoring.

Guiseley were left to rue their misses as Alfreton piled on the agony with John Knapper netting from the penalty spot and Godber grabbing his second goal in the final minute.

Guiseley had a penalty appeal turned down when Lee Reilly was brought down.

Their miserable day ended with Dave Henry, having been substituted, shown the red card for comments he was alleged to have made from the dug out.

All in all a day to forget for Guiseley. They now have to pick themselves up to face Premier Division Altrincham in the FA Cup on Saturday at Nethermoor Park (3 pm).

Neil Parsley's side has been hampered by injuries all season and no more so than this week. The manager had to cancel a planned training session on Monday night because he had too many injured players.

Parsley and his assistant manager Clive Freeman travelled to watch their FA Cup opponents in action on Tuesday night.

It is another big game for the Guiseley club with £10,000 on offer for the winners.

Of his injury worries Parsley said: "We will have to have a head count at training on Thursday. Nicky Hey and James Nettleton are struggling, Peter Atkinson is 50/50 but Richard Chattoe, Andy Watson and Dave Henry all have a chance of being fit.

"It is just an occupational hazard and we have to get on with it."

Parsley said of his spying mission: "Clive and I watched Altrincham play Vauxhall on Tuesday night and I feel that if we can play as we are capable of we have a chance. However, we will not have to defend like we did at Alfreton. If we do we have no chance of reaching the next round.

"It is the third qualifying round and it takes our minds off our inconsistent league form. It should be a nice distraction."

Parsley's assistant is certainly buzzing about a tie against one of his old clubs. He is renowned for a scorcher of a goal he netted for Altrincham against Chester in the FA Cup ten years ago. It won him the BBC Goal of the Month award.

"Clive is excited about this game but on Tuesday when he looked round at Altrincham there were only two or three hundred in the ground.

He said when he last played there there were 4,000 in and they were hanging from the rafters as he cracked his winning goal against Chester. "I had a couple of games for Altrincham on loan when I was at Witton Albion the first time around but this game is all about the players," said Parsley.
