A lorry jack-knifed across three lanes of the M62 early today causing tail-backs of up to ten miles.

The chaos occurred when two HGVs collided on the west-bound carriageway between junction 25 at Brighouse and junction 24 at Ainley Top.

One of the lorries blocked three lanes of the motorway and police closed the motorway, causing heavy congestion on the M606 and other routes into Bradford.

One lorry driver was taken to hospital suffering serious injuries, but they were not believed to be life threatening. The other lorry driver received minor injuries.

Fire crews from four stations, two ambulances and the major rescue unit from Cleckheaton rushed to the scene.

The seriously-injured driver had to be cut free from his cab, and fire spokesman said: "He had chest and ankle injuries but was conscious throughout. The front of the lorry was seriously damaged."

The driver was taken to hospital as police awaited the arrival of a recovery vehicle to take the lorry away. The surface of the motorway had to be sanded because of the amount of oil which leaked from one of the vehicles.
