BEN RHYDDING: The winner of the final for the Challenge Trophy for which qualifying rounds have been played over the summer was Sue Towler (79-15-64), runner-up Pauline Brook (87-21-66).

The Harrison Trophy awarded for a knock-out match play competition for higher handicap players was won by Susan Atkins, runner-up Sandra Speer.

The Hydro Trophy, also awarded for a match-play -competition, was won by Jill Guthrie who beat Pauline Brook in the final.

As well as playing good golf, Pauline Brook and Su Towler also have fine culinary skills as a recent social evening at the clubhouse demonstrated. Lady members and friends much appreciated the lovely meal they prepared, cooked and served.

BRACKEN GHYLL: It was a hectic weekend at Bracken Ghyll with major events on three days.

Friday saw the annual Four Nations Team Stableford in which England, captained by Jon Stones pipped Scotland by a single point. Scotland's captain, Doug Thompson, chose this event to celebrate his hole-in- one at the 17th on the previous weekend in traditional style.

On Saturday the field for the Jerome Jug flag event was annihilated by Rod Sutcliffe, who reached the third extra fairway before using up his 18 handicap. Rod put together a 10 under par net 59 for his first 18 holes, beating Howard Phillipson, 79 (16) 63, and Peter Cook, 79 (15) 64.

The bi-ennial Ryder Cup on Sunday between teams representing England and the Rest of the World resulted in a nailbiting draw. The competition was followed by the presentation of the trophy to both captains by Jenni Wilson, a decendant of Samuel Ryder, and the Bracken Ghyll Annual Prize Draw, in which the major prize of a two day trip to Slaley Hall was won by James Watson.

SKIPTON: On Monday, in glorious autumn sunshine, the Ladies and Seniors held their annual Greensome Stableford Competition.

In first place, with 44 points, were Elizabeth Smith and R Lawson; in second place, with 41 points, were Dorothy Huck and David Hyde, and also with 41 points in third place were Christine Burgess and Geoff Hulands.

Tea and cakes were served after the game in the clubhouse.

Otley: Pleasant golfing conditions prevailed for the 52 ladies who entered the Medal played on October 1. Results were:

Division One - N Nicklin, 92-19-73 on back nine from P Joule, 91-18-73. Division Two - I Denmark, 89-21-68; S Thomson, 95-22-73. Division Three - V Palmer, 110-36-73; J Lavers, 105-30-75.

On the previous Thursday, the Harrogate Union staged its Seniors' Open Day at Pannal. The combined Otley representation performed well especially Pat Lazenby, who finished second with 35 points, Pam Joule was third with 34 points and Iris Harrison won her category.
