Local businessmen and parents have been invited to join a steering group at an inner-city high school to help it secure specialist college status.

Laisterdyke High wants to become a specialist college for Business and Enterprise and intends to submit a bid to the Government next March.

The school arranged an education and community conference to which it invited parents, students, local business people, primary school heads, local councillors, governors and higher education representatives.

At the meeting the school outlined its plans to form a steering group to mastermind the bid, which could net the school as much as £600,000 in extra Government cash over four years.

To be successful the school will have to raise £50,000 in private sponsorship.

Julia Wright, vocational leader at the school, said: "We want to build real partnerships with our local community and we are aware we need to prepare our students with skills that are appropriate for the world of work."
