Heritage projects in the Bradford district are celebrating after receiving grants totalling £14,000 from the Local Heritage Initiative.

A history memories project run by Greengates and District Community Council has rec-eived £7,000 to help residents document the social, physical and industrial changes in the village's history.

Organisers plan to collate resident's photographs to create a photograph library, collect and share memories, and create a website, CD-Rom and leaflets.

The memories project, which meets at Greengates Parish Church, has been running for five months and secretary Ann Wallace said the grant would help to buy computers.

"We are aiming to bridge the gap between the young and old and will be asking old people to share their memories with young people," she said.

"There is a problem with young people's behaviour in the area and we hope the project can help tackle the issues and get them off the streets.

"We are very pleased that we have received this grant to develop the project."

Mrs Wallace said the council meets about once a month at the church and has a membership of around 20 people.

A £7,000 grant has also been made to the Dr Little Heritage Group in Ilkley to help look at ways to preserve the Panorama Stones in St Margaret's Park in the town. The cash will fund research into interpreting the prehistoric artwork on the stones, which is some of the most elaborate in the country.

Brian Mann, treasurer of the Dr Little Heritage Group, said: "These stones have international significance. And as the town of Ilkley owns the stones, its people feel obliged to look after them." The group can now move the stones, which have cup, ring and ladder markings, to Ilkley's Manor House Museum.
